My Path to Becoming a Therapist

I am often asked why I became a therapist, and the honest answer is that I have been there myself. I have experienced many life challenges that have been difficult to navigate. First and foremost, before being a therapist, I am a human being.

Having worked in the corporate world for many years, I instinctively knew that there was something else out there for me. However, at that time it felt out of reach and scary. Fast forward a few years, I took some time out, started therapy and began to process my past and begin to realise what I was capable of. Starting therapy was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Facing the First Step

Understanding Therapy Nerves

I firmly believe that therapy is for the everyday and not only for the super tough times. To begin to build and enhance the everyday tool kit and encourage well being, self understanding, growth and empowerment. I am passionate about debunking the myth that you need to have experienced life-changing trauma to engage in therapy. You don’t. Let’s just start with being human and navigating life….that is enough!

Understanding My Approach

Empathetic and Client-Led Therapy

Therapy helped me to rebuild myself and make sense of previous life events. Therapy enabled me to process and actually identify that we are products of our environments. We are all doing the best we can with the tools we have. It helped me to rebuild my confidence and connect with myself. Fundamentally, understanding my needs rather than seeking out external sources. Asking myself what I need in this moment and learning what my needs were, what my mind and body were telling me. Understanding the mind and body connection is powerful!

So…inevitably, my experience inspired me to train as a therapist. My goal being to offer the same kind of safe space and understanding to others. Since qualifying and opening my practice, I have worked with many clients, accumulating over hundreds of client hours. Receiving positive feedback from clients is such an affirmative experience, confirming that I chose the right path, and I am hopefully contributing to positive change in the lives of others. Just as I experienced.

Empowering Through Understanding

The Value of Collaboration

Working Together for Better Outcomes

If you are feeling unsure about therapy, then I want to reassure you that therapy isn’t scary. You don’t have to be “good” at therapy or have everything worked out. Taking the first step is enough. I am quite often told by clients how nervous they were in their first session, only to get further along in their journey and have zero regrets for taking that first step. Of course, it is understandable that you will feel nervous meeting someone new for the first time and adapting to opening up on such a personal level. However, speaking from experience the sense of relief will be worth it.

How I Work

I am based from my private practice in Hamstreet, Ashford, offering both face-to-face and online sessions. I work with a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, low self esteem, trauma, addiction, grief and relationship issues, whether that’s romantic, family or professional. My style and the way I work is grounded in the individual needs of my clients and them being the focus and the priority of the session. Working with you at your pace offering a space that feels safe and down-to-earth. The relationship I develop with my clients is absolutely paramount to my practice.

Working in partnership with other therapists like Becky allows us as therapists to offer even better and more informed support to our clients. Identifying where there is potential need for referral or where a client might be placed to receive the expertise they need.  We recognise that we all bring different skills, experiences, and styles, and this means we can connect people with the kind of therapist and approach that fits their needs best. Collaboration in this field isn’t just professional, it’s personal. It’s about creating a strong, supportive community for both clients and counsellors alike.
